About L. Lee Knefelkamp
Lee Knefelkamp was a great believer in the power of learning. She also believed that learning depends on context and that student success is, therefore, inextricably linked to campus success. The most powerful forms of learning occur within campus environments that are intentionally designed to support students as learners, as citizens, and as thriving individuals. Within such an environment, for example, students’ cognitive development is linked to their development of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and civic capacities; mentoring, reflection, and community engagement are understood to promote student success and to strengthen curricula; and the curriculum and cocurriculum are connected because learning occurs in all corners of campus life. The link between student success and campus success is forged by a systemic commitment to equity that ensures all students, particularly those from groups historically underserved by higher education, are seen and heard. This commitment guides institutional programming, policy, and professional development as well as personnel decisions. Linking student and campus success recognizes that colleges and universities function as ecosystems and that the power of learning depends on coherence and connection.
The purpose of the L. Lee Knefelkamp Fund is to promote intentional and sustained linkages between student and campus success. To achieve this, the fund will seek to support and recognize excellence and innovation in campus-based efforts within three broad areas of work: (1) integration of the curriculum and cocurriculum; (2) holistic advising and mentoring; and (3) professional development inclusive of multiple campus constituencies. Support and recognition in these areas may be realized in various forms, including but not limited to: an annual award, special sessions at the AAC&U annual meeting or other conferences, and targeted engagement and professional development for recipients of the K. Patricia Cross Future Scholars Award. With the generous support of donors within and beyond higher education, AAC&U hopes to endow the L. Lee Knefelkamp fund as an enduring reflection of Lee Knefelkamp’s wisdom, spirit, and commitment to student success.
